SECTION 3
' SITE SPECIFIC HEALTH AND SAFETY
PLAN
' Significant site-specific hazards anticipated during fieldwork are
underground utilities, motor traffic, and potentially, heat stress
Exposure to petroleum products during well construction is
anticipated to be minimal.
Utilities will be located prior to the initiation of field work by a mark-
out service During field work, the actual locations of the wells will
be carefully chosen using information provided by the markout and
noting any other potential hazards ( e.g, overhead electrical lines,
' etc.). Caution will also be maintained during drilling by slowly
advancing the drill for approximately the first five feet of depth
Traffic safety will consist of placing traffic cones around the work
site. If appropriate, the field vehicles will be positioned to protect the
immediate work zone.
If field work is performed during warm weather, air temperatures
will be monitored during sampling and construction activity.
Workers will be instructed to be alert for signs and symptoms of heat
' stress. Frequent rest periods will be taken in a location out of the
sun. During rest periods, workers will be instructed to drink plenty
' of fluids.
Exposure to petroleum products is anticipated to be low. At the start
of field work, Level D protection will be used. This protection level
' will include the use of gloves, and the frequent monitoring of the bore
hole opening with an organic vapor monitor. If conditions warrant,
the level of protection will be upgraded to Level C which will include,
at a minimum, protective clothing and half-faced, air-purifying,
canister-equipped respirator
3-1
