SECTION 4
POST EXCAVATION INVESTIGATION
ACTIVITIES AND RESULTS
1 This section describes the field activities that were undertaken after
completion of the excavation activities to address PHS/EHD's concern
' that hydrocarbon-containing soil at Former Tank Sites #1 and #2 may
not have been completely remediated In addition, the results of this
' investigation and the ground water monitoring are presented
Field Activities
In response to PHS/EHD's concern, ERM prepared and submitted a
workplan entitled Proposal for Additional Soil Characterization, 1325
& 1515 West Weber Avenue, Stockton, California (May 24, 1994) to
address additional soil investigation The workplan outlined the
following
• Location and purpose of soil borings at each former tank site,
• Drilling and soil sampling methodologies,
• Field screening methodology, and
• Laboratory analytical methods
Following the approval of the workplan by PHS/EHD, the additional
characterization was performed in accordance with the workplan as
summarized in this section
Soil boring and sampling activities at Former Tank Sites #1 and #2
' were conducted during two phases in September 1994 TEG of
Sacramento, California, drilled borings and collected soil samples on
September 9, 1994 at locations within the warehouse buildings at the
' two sites TEG attempted to drill the borings within the excavation
footprints at each investigation site, however, the hydraulic push
sampler could not penetrate the gravel backfill at the base of the former
excavations, and the borings could not be completed Therefore, ERM
contracted with Gregg Drilling and Testing, Inc , of Pacheco, California,
to drill and sample the soils underlying the excavation footprints at
' 4-1
