r
Ms. Margaret Lagorio
Mr. Ronald Rowe
Page 2
June 18, 1998
sufficient time to obtain and evaluate bids to perform this work. A follow-up meeting was also planned
to discuss the results and how to incorporate them into the workplan addendum.
The date for submittal of the hydrogeologic cross sections slipped a bit, to February 4, 1998, due to
difficulties in coordinating review and revision of the draft document between the responsible parties.
On February 11, 1998 the parties met with PHS/EHD to discuss the results and decide on future
actions. During that meeting, it was agreed that the parties would update the well survey to allow us to
address potential influences of past and present groundwater withdrawal in the workplan addendum.
Interim drafts of the well survey update memorandum were submitted on February 25,and March 6,
1998 and the final document was delivered on March 30, 1998.That memo concludes that no wells are
located within one-half mile of the Disco property that would influence groundwater gradients with the
exception of three Del Monte wells located north of the Disco property;these wells are currently
inactive. Table I attached to this letter summarizes Del Monte's progress toward fulfilling the
activities requested in the PHS/EHD's October 14, 1997 letter.
Since submitting the well survey update, we have been in the process of completing the enclosed June
1998 workplan addendum. Del Monte has also continued to monitor, and report the results of quarterly
groundwater monitoring for TPH, BTEX, and oxygenate compounds at the Disco property.
Workplan and Addendum for Additional Investigations
The June 1998 workplan addendum describes cone penetrometer and grab groundwater sampling
activities to obtain additional lithologic information and to determine the probable vertical and
horizontal extent of hydrocarbon constituents in groundwater. These activities will be completed first
and the information obtained will be used to modify the well and boring locations and depths
described in the 1997 workplan, as appropriate, to better define the vertical and horizontal extent of
hydrocarbon constituents in soil and groundwater.A proposed schedule for executing the workplan
and addendum is attached.
The 1997 workplan and June 1998 addendum include information on sample locations and analytes,
but generally does not specify methods for grab groundwater sample collection, specific health and
safety protocols, or laboratory and drilling contractors to be used. This information will be provided by
the consultant selected to perform the work.
As we discussed, we are anxious to meet with you to finalize the 1997 workplan and June 1998
addendum and obtain PHS/EHD approval to expedite additional investigations. In addition, as you
know, the PHS/EHD's written approval is required in order to obtain reimbursement pre-approval
from California's UST cleanup fund;as always we appreciate the PHS/EHD's assistance in this
regard.
SFOW8WPLETTER4.D0C
