08 July 2003
AGE-NC Project No. 03-1042
DRILLING AND SAMPLE COLLECTION
On 26 June 2003, five soil probe borings (B-1,B-2,B-5,B-6, and B-7)were advanced at the site as
part of assessment activities. Proposed borings B-3 and B-4 were not completed based on field
observations and time constraints. AGE chose the completed boring locations in order to collect a
representative sample of the subject properties subsurface. The field work was conducted as outlined
in the AGE-prepared,Phase 77 Site Assessment Work Plan, dated 16 June 2003.
Soil probe borings B-1, B-2, B-5 B-6, and B-7 were advanced utilizing a truck-mounted Geoprobe
5400,equipped with 1.125-inch diameter probe rods with an attached 2.15-inch diameter soil sampler,
using"direct push"technology.Th thre borings were advanced vertically to depths of 25 feet below
surface grade (bsg) for collection of soilsamples.
Soil samples were collected at 5-foot intervals beginning at 5 feet bsg to the total depth of each boring.
Each sample was collected utilizing a 1.125-inch Geoprobe soil sampling assembly loaded with four
six-inch brass sleeves. After collection, the ends of the second brass sleeve were covered with Teflon
sheets, capped and sealed with tape. The sleeve was labeled with soil probe boring location, depth,
time, date and sampler's initials and then placed in a chilled container. In addition to the above sample
preperation, a soil sample from one of the three remaining sleeves was field-screened for the
presence of volatile organic compounds using an photo ionization detector(PID). Following soil
sample collection, all probe-boring locations were backfilled to surface grade with Portland cement.
EQUIPMENT DECONTAMINATION
Prior to sample collection,Geoprobe soil sampling equipment was thoroughly rinsed with clean water
after being washed with a solution of Alconox. Geoprobe rods were thoroughly cleaned prior to soil
probe boring advancement.
ANALYTICAL METHODS
The collected soil samples were transported under chain-of-custody to Cal Tech Environmental
Laboratories(CTEL),a California Department of Health Services-certified laboratory, for analysis for:
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH-all) in accordance with EPA Method 8015M and
• Volatile organic compounds,including benzene,toluene,ethylbenzene and xylenes(BTEX),
and the fuel additives tertiary butanol (TBA), di-isopropyl ether (DIPE), ethyl tert-butyl
ether (ETBE), tert-amyl methyl ether (TAME), methyl tertiary- butyl ether (MTBE),
1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCA) and 1,2-dibromoethane (EDB) in accordance with EPA
Method 8260B.
• Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in accordance with EPA Method 8082.
Advanced GeoEmir•nmental,Inc.
