KLEINFELDER
n
Active remediation began In May 2003 In the source area (actual Disco site) by means
of ASNES utilizing a thermal/catalytic oxidizer unit. Continual operation of the thermal
oxidizer began in June 2003. In July 2003, the ASNES unit was converted from a
thermal oxidizer to catalytic oxidizer thereby optimizing the efficiency through fuel
uptake. The ozone injection system began consistent operation within the down
gradient portion of the plume in September 2003.
The ASNES system was optimized in the Fourth Quarter 2004 by centralizing the
extraction on VE-1 (centrally located over the former UST locations). This concentrates
the VES system where the majority of the residual contamination persists. However, air
sparging is being applied to four of the five locations (AS-1, AS-2, AS-4, and AS-5).
The primary maintenance conducted this quarter involved replacement of a leaking
shaft seal in the air sparge compressor from November 22 to December 5, 2005. Also,
the VES blower motor was out of commission between December 19 and December
31, 2005 for repairs.
On December 9, 2005 air samples were collected to evaluation of the performance of
the catalytic oxidizer for the ASWES within the source area. Air samples "inlet' and
"outlet" were collected from the influent line into the catalytic oxidizer and the effluent
port on the exhaust stack of the catalytic oxidizer by means of 1-liter summa canisters.
Kleinfelder delivered samples under chain-of-custody control to Air Toxics, Ltd. of
Folsom, California for the requested analysis. Air Toxics is certified by California
Department of Health and Services to perform the request analysis. The air samples
were analyzed for the following:
• Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons-gasoline (TPH-g) by MOD Method TO-14A;
Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene, Xylene (BTEX) by MOD Method TO-14A;
1,2 DCA by MOD Method TO-14A;
i
M
I
12280.M0N/ST06R070/CD:Iv Page 9 of 14
0 2006 Kleinfelder, Inc.
