I
Groundwater Sampling
Each monitoring well was sampled at least once between June 26 and September 23,
1991. Observations made before sampling included total well depth, depth to water,
and presence of petroleum sheens or free product on the water surface. A Grundfos
submersible pump was used to extract groundwater samples.
Before sampling each well, the pump and discharge hose was cleaned by operating the
pump in a bucket containing a detergent solution (Alkonox) for a minimum of 10
minutes, followed by a clean water rinse for a minimum of 10 minutes.
jAfter pump and discharge hose cleaning, a minimum of three well volumes of
groundwater were purged from each well. While purging the wells, the water pH,
electrical conductivity, and temperature were recorded.
Samples were then collected and sealed in appropriate containers, stored in an ice-
filled cooler, and delivered to the CH2M HILL Analytical Laboratory in Redding,
California. All groundwater samples were analyzed for BTEX, TPH-gas, and lead.
One sample was also analyzed for conventional water-quality parameters (major ions,
I hardness, alkalinity, total dissolved solids (TDS), electrical conductivity (EC), pH,
L methylene blue active substance (MBAS), and coliform bacteria).
t
Area Well Location Survey
A survey of water-producing wells within one mile of Plant 33 was performed by
contacting local utilities, including California Water Services and the City of Stockton,
and other agencies (Appendix C). Results of the survey are presented in Section 3.
Waste Management
r Soil cuttings from the hollow-stem auger borings are temporarily being stored on plastic
sheets (visqueen) at the Del Monte Disco area.. Mud cuttings from the mud rotary
drilling are temporarily being stored in a bermed, visqueen-lined area at the Disco lot.
1 Groundwater development and purged water were stored in properly labeled U.S.
Department of Transportation 55-gallon drums. The drummed water was handled by
Del Monte's permitted water discharge and wastewater systems. Water determined to
be hazardous'was hauled and disposed of by Romic Chemical located in East Palo
f Alto, California (EPA ID: CAD009452657), under contract with Del Monte.
I
5 .
{
sF0316041RP1003.51 2-6
I
