(WKA)
for the above referenced site.
The report contains results of laboratory analyses which were performed on samples obtained January
2, 1996 from six on site monitoring wells and one off site monitoring well. The report draws no
conclusions and makes no recommendations from data obtained to date.
The groundwater investigation phase of the Van Buren Street Chase Chevrolet site and the Crystal
Creamery site is complete. There is no indication that the Crystal plume and the Chase plume are
comingling. Monitoring wells installed for the Chase investigation which are closest to the Crystal site
show non detectable concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons. Chase MW-16 is located southeast of
Crystal MW-2 and Chase MW-14 is located at the northeast corner of the intersection of Fremont and
Van Buren streets. Chase MW-14 is approximately 80 feet northeast of the Crystal site and 160 feet
northeast of Crystal MW4. Chase well MWA4 is located downgradient of the Crystal site and is free
of contamination. A well at the southwest corner of the same intersection would be a more appropriate
location for determining the downgradient extent of the Crystal plume, however this location is
unsuitable due to the presence of underground utilities.
The Crystal plume is migrating off site in the direction of MW-3 which is located in Van Buren Street.
An increase in contamination in MW-5 indicates that the plume may be migrating off site to the north.
MW-1 , closest to the original tank location, which historically has had sheen or free product, shows
decreasing concentrations. MW-4 centrally located on the site, north of the original tank excavation,
shows increasing concentrations.
In letters dated November 9, 1994 and February 3, 1995, PHS/EHD requested a workplan for interim
remediation or investigation of soil contamination surrounding the former tank excavation. This
residual soil contamination was documented during the January 14, 1987 overexcavation of the former
UST location to a depth of 18 feet. The WKA report dated September 2, 1994 states that the
excavation was reportedly deepened to a depth of 22 feet. There is no record of this additional
overexcavation. The conclusion in the September 2, 1994 WKA report is "gasoline contaminated soils
have been detected at a depth of 18 feet beneath the UST and likely extends to groundwater based on
floating hydrocarbons observed in MW-1 . " At this time there is no workplan to investigate or remediate
this secondary source.
A Division of San Joaquin County Health Care Sere ices
