404 WEST FREMONT
t WKA No 1628 01
February 25, 1993
Page 4
The soil and ground water contamination is reported to be located beneath two areas of the Chase
Chevrolet property near the northeast corner of Fremont and Madison Street, and near the
' western border along Van Buren Street The contamination along Van Buren Street is a concern
due to the high levels of gasoline contamination detected in ground water samples from the three
monitoring wells located there, and the proximity of the contamination to the Crystal Creamery
' property One of the three wells is reported by RESNA in their April 16, 1992 Quarterly
Report, to have over 11/z feet of floating hydrocarbons on the water The RESNA quarterly
' report also indicates ground water flow direction beneath the western portion of the property is to
the north with a gradient of 0 003 ft/ft
1
Hydrogeologic Setting
The 1966 California Division of Mines and Geology "Geologic Map of California, San Jose
Sheet" shows the site to be underlain by Quaternary Basin Deposits These deposits consists
primarily of "semi-consolidated gravels, sands and silts" that are the remnants of older alluvial
terraces and dissected alluvial fans The thickness of the Quaternary Basin Deposits is variable
but is likely to be over one hundred feet thick beneath the site The soils observed during the
' tank removal were brown and gray sands and silts
' The site heb within the San Joaquin Valley Ground Water Basin (California Department of Water
Resources, 1986) The upper ground water table is expected to be unconfined and approximately
20 feet below grade, based on the Spring, 1990 Ground Water Elevation Contour Map published
by San Joaquin Flood Control and Water Conservation District The regional ground water flow
direction is reported to be easterly, ground water depths have been observed to fluctuate between
' 16 to 27 feet below grade
WALLAC5 ILUML
R.>,Id p„p,T 6 ASSOCIA755 IWC.
