Given our findings, we are proposing the use of an in situ air sparginglsoil
vapor extraction system(SUES)for removing light end dissolved-phase and residual- '
phase petroleum hydrocarbons from groundwater beneath the site and the
intermediate zone between groundwater and unsaturated soils(vadose zone).
The proposed system functions by injecting air into the groundwater for the purpose
of stripping petroleum hydrocarbons and VOCs dissolved in groundwater or
contained in the vadose zone. The air forms bubbles that rise into the vadose and
corzrolAr r of li(:;- unsaturated zones carrying trapped and dissolved petroleum hydrocarbons and
30"o lrdnstl;al Blvd. volatile organic compounds(VOCs): Additionally,the air sparging system provides
Wes[ sacramen o oxygen to groundwater stimulating activity of the naturally occurring
CA 95691
TO 916.372.)ii3n, .microorganisms that work to degrade petroleum hydrocarbons. Once the target
l=<<x 916.r2.z505
compounds have been stripped from the groundwater, a series of soil vapor extraction
wellsWs installed in the unsaturated zone will collect the s ar ed air.
