08 April 1997
AGE-NC Project No. 95-0167
A total of seven soil samples and one water sample were analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons
quantified as gasoline (TPH-g) and volatile aromatic (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and total
xylenes; BTE&X) according to EPA method 8015m and 8020/602, respectively. TPH-g and BTE&X
were detected in soil samples collected from probe boring P2 at 20 feet and very slight
contamination was present at 25 feet. Soil samples collected from P3 indicated TPH-g and BTE&X
contamination at 10 feet. TPH-g was not detected in the grab ground water sample collected at the
site. However, benzene; toluene and xylenes were detected in the ground water sample collected.
Concentrations of BTE&X ranged from 1 .3 lig/l, (parts per billion) of benzene to- 4.8 ppb of toluene.
2.4 . GROUND WATER DEPTH AND FLOW DIRECTION
Based upon ground water monitoring wells located on nearby properties, ground water depth at the
site is estimated to be approximately 25 feet bsg. Regional ground water flow direction at the site
I
s north or northeast. However, locally ground water flow direction can vary seasonally.
3 .0. SCOPE OF WORK
The analytical results from the installation of three probe boring samples indicates that ground water
at the site is impacted by petroleum hydrocarbons . Therefore, the PHS-EHD has request the lateral
and vertical definition of both the hydrocarbon-impacted soil and ground water.
3 . 1 . BORING ADVANCEMENT
AGE proposes to advance five soil probe borings at the site to determine the lateral and vertical
extent of hydrocarbon-impacted soil and ground water. Probe borings will be advanced using a
Geoprobe 5400 probing unit equipped with 1 .25-inch probing rods. Each soil probe boring will be
advanced to a depth of 25 feet bsg.
One boring will be advanced north of the edge of the former UST excavation on the site, from which
a grab water samples will be collected . A second boring will be advanced south of the edge of the
former UST excavation. A probe boring will be advanced at an angle of approximately 25 ' from
vertical beneath the building on-site, immediately north of the former dispenser.
Two additional probe boring will be established for the purpose of collecting soil and grab water
samples from the dispenser area and the a grab water sample from the parking lane of Fremont
Street.
