26 February 1996
AGE-NC Project No. 95-0167
(MAI) under chain-of-custody procedures.
One grab ground water sample was collected from probing P1 using a Geoprobe water sampling
assembly. The sample was collected in 40-m! VOA vials, placed in a chilled container and transported
under chain-of-custody procedure to MAI.
Soil and ground water samples were analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as gasoline
(TPH-g) and volatile aromatics (benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene and total xylenes; BTE&X) in
accordance with EPA methods 5030/8015m and 8020/602, respectively.
FINDINGS
TPH-g was detected in soil samples from probings P2 and P3 at concentrations up to 230 mg/kg
(ppm; P3-10'). BTE&X were detected in soil samples collected from probings P2 and P3 at
concentrations ranging from 0.010 (ethyl benzene, P3-25)to 19 ppm (xylene, P3-10'). No petroleum
hydrocarbons were detected in samples from probing P I.
Benzene, toluene and xylenes were detected in the grab ground water sample from probing P1 at
w concentrations of 1.3, 4.8, and 2.6 ,ug/l (parts per billions: ppb), respectively. Analytical results of
the soil and grab ground water samples are summarized in Table 1. The laboratory report (MAI
Laboratory I.D. 56586 through 56598) and chain-of-custody are attached.
CONCLUSIONS
Based upon the analytical results of soil samples collected during the preliminary investigation,
petroleum hydrocarbon-impacted soil at the site appears to be limited to the immediate area of the
former UST. Analytical results of the grab sample collected from probing P I indicates that ground
water at the site may be impacted.
LIMITATIONS
Our professional services were performed using that degree of care and skill ordinarily exercised by
environmental consultants practicing in this or similar localities. The findings were based mainly upon
analytical results provided by an independent laboratory. Evaluations of the geologic/hydrogeologic
conditions at the site for the purpose of this investigation are made from a limited number of available
data points(i.e. soil samples), and subsurface conditions may vary away frorn these data points. No
other warranty, expressed or implied, is made as to the professional recommendations contained in
this report.
