t
were all going to live out there and farm the other 80 acres .
They may change the type of agricultural use to cherry trees and
other crops . He said the six-acre project site fits the General
Plan and is a small area that is part of the larger 86-acre area .
They want to make the six-acre site consistent with what is going
on in Acampo to the north.
Jim Sturman ( 2842 East Center Street, Acampo) said his property
nearly borders the subject site. He supports the project . He
has lived in the area for five years .
OPPONENTS:
Anthony Fuso ( 1101 County Drive, Lodi ) said his family farms to
the west of the parcel . He is opposed to any small , minor sub-
divisions in the County that have leach lines, that are not
planned communities , and that want to be attached onto small
communities , such as the proposed site. The same thing has hap-
pened throughout the County, such as Collierville , the small sub-
division on Fairlane Road off of Kennefick. These small
subdivisions are -generally for people who do not work in the
rural area . They work in urban areas . They have a lack of
respect or knowledge of the farming community and what it
entails . They tend to hamper agricultural operations, such as
spraying. Agricultural land is slowly being eroded away and not
being preserved . Some of the most productive farm land in the
world is in the Acampo area and outlying areas of Lodi . When
five acres or ten acres are taken out at a time, this very
valuable natural resource will be depleted. He urged the
Commission to deny the project . If Acampo is to grow, it should
have a planned sewer and water system. He said he believed the
four homeowners are trying to finance their new cherry operation
by building the six homes .
Jeryl Fry, Jr. , ( 12495 North West Lane , Lodi ) , the property owner
to the west and southwest of the project site, said he was
opposed to the project . His vineyard is directly on the windward
side of the project site. He is dependent on aircraft to spray
his crop. He uses helicopters to defrost in the winter and
aircraft to do the sulpher dusting . If the project is approved,
the airplanes will fly in an east-west direction. This would be
a problem because of the narrow spacing of the vineyard and the
close proximity of the homes . There is a right-to-farm ordinance
in the County. His parcel is in the Williamson Act .
Howard Sasaki ( 2882 Center Street, Acampo ) said he has lived in
Acampo since 1957 . He said that if the project is approved, he
wants to have his property rights respected .
Richard Grenz ( 2509 Amberwood, Lodi ) said he farms 20 acres of
land on the northern edge of Acampo . He opposes this project
because agricultural land in the Acampo area is some of the
primest land in the state.
PC Minutes - 9 - (PC: 4-5-90 )
