8.4 Site Monitoring
8,1 Air Monitoring
Air monitoring is essential to ensure that all field personnel are adequately protected from
airborne contaminants The levels of orgaruc vapors in the work area will be monitored using
a photoionrzation detector (PID) or flame ionization detector (FID)
Combustible gas readings shall be conducted m the work areas if flammable contaminants are
anticipated Oxygen readings will be conducted in work areas where there is a reasonable
possibility that an oxygen deficient atmosphere may exist All air monitoring results shall be
documented in project logs
The Health and Safety Representative may conduct integrated personal exposure monitoring
Any integrated air samples will be analyzed through a laboratory accredited by the American
Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA)
8.7.1 Locations to be Monitored
All personal, integrated air morutormg samples and direct reading instrumentation readings
taken for the purpose of determining appropriate health and safety precautions shall be
collected/taken in the approximate "breathing zone" of the IT or subcontractor employees.
Additionally, upon initial excavation or sampling activity and periodically during excavation
and sampling, combustible gas and oxygen readings near the open excavation or borehole
and in the breathing zone of the nearest worker will be monitored and documented
8.1.2 Frequency
Breathing zone air monitoring must be conducted periodically throughout the day while any
sampling or site investigation work is being performed in the EZ regardless of the level of
protection being worn Combustible gas and oxygen monitoring will be conducted prior to
and periodically during excavation activities and whenever a borehole is opened Such
readings must be documented on FADL forms or air monitoring forms even if contaminant
concentrations are "nondettctable "
MWI1-29-94/RHS/HASP/94-0037 JAF 8„1
