8.4 Site Monitoring <br /> 8,1 Air Monitoring <br /> Air monitoring is essential to ensure that all field personnel are adequately protected from <br /> airborne contaminants The levels of orgaruc vapors in the work area will be monitored using <br /> a photoionrzation detector (PID) or flame ionization detector (FID) <br /> Combustible gas readings shall be conducted m the work areas if flammable contaminants are <br /> anticipated Oxygen readings will be conducted in work areas where there is a reasonable <br /> possibility that an oxygen deficient atmosphere may exist All air monitoring results shall be <br /> documented in project logs <br /> The Health and Safety Representative may conduct integrated personal exposure monitoring <br /> Any integrated air samples will be analyzed through a laboratory accredited by the American <br /> Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) <br /> 8.7.1 Locations to be Monitored <br /> All personal, integrated air morutormg samples and direct reading instrumentation readings <br /> taken for the purpose of determining appropriate health and safety precautions shall be <br /> collected/taken in the approximate "breathing zone" of the IT or subcontractor employees. <br /> Additionally, upon initial excavation or sampling activity and periodically during excavation <br /> and sampling, combustible gas and oxygen readings near the open excavation or borehole <br /> and in the breathing zone of the nearest worker will be monitored and documented <br /> 8.1.2 Frequency <br /> Breathing zone air monitoring must be conducted periodically throughout the day while any <br /> sampling or site investigation work is being performed in the EZ regardless of the level of <br /> protection being worn Combustible gas and oxygen monitoring will be conducted prior to <br /> and periodically during excavation activities and whenever a borehole is opened Such <br /> readings must be documented on FADL forms or air monitoring forms even if contaminant <br /> concentrations are "nondettctable " <br /> MWI1-29-94/RHS/HASP/94-0037 JAF 8„1 <br />
