B. Spill prevention is coordinated through the "Emergency coordinator".
These steps must be taken by each first line supervisor to prevent, or
reduce the spills of hazardous waste:
1. Seal all shop drains with rubber mat
2. Use absorbent materials to contain spill (oil dry)
3. Prepare to respond to spill
4. Maintain Spill Kits
If a Spill Occurs
A. Under EPA a spill is defined as one pint, or one pound of an objectionable
substance that could threaten to enter ground water, or surface water.
This definition includes spilling an objectionable substances on the
ground, into the water, or into a drain that does not lead to a wastewater
treatment plant. All spills must be taken by the first line manager:
1. Alert management and get employee(s) out of the immediate area.
2. If the spilled material is not flammable, place container in a secondary
container to stop the leak.
3. If appropriate, placed spill sock, and for oil dry to prevent the material
from spreading.
B. After the Emergency coordinator arrives these actions may take place.
1. Personnel trained in spill clean up, must put on PPE
2. Only personnel that comply with the respirator program are authorized
to wear a respirator. NO EXCEPTIONS.
3. Begin cleaning up the spill using items from the spill kit under direction
of the Emergency coordinator or Assistant Coordinator.
4. Pack and label the material in appropriate containers.
5. Make hazardous waste determination in the spill material and manage
accordingly.
6. Have arranged for an approved company (Safety Kleen) to haul waste
off property and properly dispose of it.
7. Finally, at first moment that situation is under control, locate your
Emergency Notification Phone Numbers and follow written
instructions.
Other emergencies will be dealt with on an as "needed basis."
15
