E
I ' I
from the sides and bottom of the excavation as directed by the
tCounty representative. Their locations are shown on PLATE VII.
SAMPLING PROCEDURE: Soil samples were collected from the teeth of
the backhoe bucket by forcing a clean, hollow metal tube into the
' material; the ends were promptly covered with teflon tape &
plastic end caps, & thoroughly sealed with duct tape. The tube
was then labeled & placed on ice in a sealed chest for preserva-
tion
A brief description of each preserved sample follows=
' Btm. So. 15' - sandy clay with a petroleum odor.
Btm. No. 16' - wet sandy clay, no odor noted.
SW-1 10' 6" - clay & sandy clay; fair petroleum odor.
' SW-2 11' -- clay & silty clay; strong petroleum odor.
SW-3 14' -- silty clay; slight petr. odor.
SW--4 1216" - clay & silty clay; strong petr. odor
After completion of sampling operations, the excavation was
filled with clean pea gravel. A total of 126 cubic yards of
contaminated soil was transported to Forward Inc. landfill for
disposal; waste haul manifests are attached as EXHIBIT K_
The spoil pile was also sampled by the geologist for profiling
purposes; the locations of those samples are shown on PLATE VIII.
Samples were collected by digging down into the pile about 12"
and pushing a clean metal tube into the spoil. The tube was
' sealed and preserved as described above.
The preserved soil samples were transported under chain of
custody by Wm. Hunter to FGL Laboratory in Stockton with
' instructions to test for BTEX & TPH-G; spoil pile samples were to
be composited and tested for BTEX, TPH-G, & total lead. STLC
lead was to be run for any samples which exceeded 50 mg/kg total
lead.
The results of those analyzes is summarized on TABLE II; copies
' of the laboratory reports & chain of custody is included as
EXHIBIT J.
DISCUSSION OF RESULTS OF LATEST WORK
The results of the soil analyzes taken at the completion of the
overexcavatzon are summarized on PLATE VIS.. The data shows that
all of the samples contained detectable levels of BTEX & THP-G;
this data agrees closely with field observations during excava-
tion & sampling operations. The highest levels of BTEX & TPH-G
were measured from the north and south walls of the excavation;
the sample from the east wall had significantly lower levels,
' 5
k
