F ` r
Physicochemical (Nutrient) Analyses -W
Effective and efficient bioremediation methodologies rely not only upon the presence of a
carbon substrate (i.e., petroleum hydrocarbon), but also upon the physicochemical (nutrient)
conditions supporting the biodegradative process. In addition to oxygen (for aerobic/oxida-
tive metabolism) and an appropriate pH range, adequate concentrations of bionutrients must
be available to the microbial population for metabolic processes to occur. Although micro-
` organisms require trace inorganic nutrients, the primary nutrients essential to their growth are
nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium. A more detailed account of the significance of
nutrient tracking and how it correlates to biodegradative processes can be found in our
companion publication The Significance and Benefits of Microbiological and Physicochemi-
cal Tracking in the Bioremedial Process.
Knowledge of microbial nutrient requirements is clearly essential to ensure bioremedial
performance and efficiency. It is important to remember that without adequate levels of
nutrients, little, if any, biodegradative activity can be expected to occur. An additional consid-
eration is to understand the consequences of too little or too much nutrient, for example, the
health and safety concerns of nitrate overloading (biotoxicity). BioLogic's goal is to educate
the client by providing clear, concise interpretations of physicochemical data generated by
our laboratory. The better informed the client is, the better the treatment choices that are
made.
BioLogic's laboratory has the capability to conduct basic, routine physicochemical analyses
on a variety of environmental parameters, some of which are listed below. These evaluations
are performed during site characterization and bioprocess monitoring activities. The results of
t nutrient evaluations are reported in parts-per-million (ppm), and in the case of nitrogen
compounds, concentrations of both molecular and ionic forms are provided. For a more com-
plete representation of all of the physicochemical parameters analyses conducted by BioLogic
- please refer to our price list.
0 pH 0 Ammonia nitrogen
0 Phosphates 13 Potassium
0 Nitrate nitrogen 0 Moisture (soil)
0 Nitrite nitrogen 0 Iron H(in situ only)
4
