ARAMARK Uniform Services
LEAD SAFETY PROGRAM
Prepared by:
Al Perez, CIH, CSP
Sr. Manager, Health and Safety
The following is a summary of the Lead Safety Program for all AUS market centers to ensure
protection of our employees and compliance with OSHA's Lead Standard(29CFR
1910.1025)when handling lead-contaminated merchandise. Various requirements in the Lead
Standard are addressed below. Alternate procedures must be approved in advance by the
Safety Department.
Exposure Determination—AUS has been handling lead accounts for many years and has
conducted numerous industrial hygiene studies. We have been able to determine that it is
unlikely that our safe handling procedures will expose employees above the OSHA action
level(3.0 micrograms per cubic meter).
Engineering and Work Practice_Controls Safe work practices have been developed
specifically for lead accounts. These work practices are required at all market centers handing
lead accounts. Specific requirements are included in Attachment A.
Trainin — Initial and annual training is provided in accordance with the Lead Standard
(including a discussion of Appendices A and B of the Lead Standard). Please refer to
Attachments B and C for training information. Power Point materials must be used for
training purposes and are available from the Safety Department.
Containers/Dust Control—In our experience,the use of sling carts and/or water-soluble bags
are sufficient to control dust migration and potential employee exposures. This method
should be adequate to comply with OSHA's requirement for"closed containers".
Visible dust will be removed with damp wiping or rinsing. Sling and bags will be laundered
after each use to control cross-contamination. If direct handling of merchandise is required,
then it will be misted to control dust migration (i.e.,to adjust weight of slings or during
accidental spills.)
Labeling—All bags, sling and other containers will be labeled in accordance with the
requirements in Attachment A.
Personal Protective Equipment—At a minimum, all employees will be provided nitrile gloves
to protect against dust exposure.
Personal Hygiene—Employees are provided a lavatory to ensure they wash after handling the
lead account.
Recordkeeping—Training, air monitoring and other activities will be documented in
accordance with the Lead Standard.
(Based on AUS exposure levels and handling procedures, Warning Signs, Medical
Surveillance, Respiratory Protection, Change Rooms and Showers are not required as
defined by OSHA's Lead standard.)
