The term"monitored natural attenuation," as used in the Directive, refers to the reliance on natural
attenua:don processes (within the context of a carefully controlled and monitored site, cleanup
approach)to achieve site-specific remediation objectives within a time frame that is reasonable
compared to.that offered by other more active methods.
3. The progress of MNA toward a site's remediation objectives should be carefully monitored and
compared with expectations. Where NINA's ability to meet these expectations is uncertain and
based pfedominantly on predictive analyses, decision makers should incorporate contingency
measures into the remedy.
Therefore, Chevron must continue to assess the cleanup progress by monitoring the site semi-annually in
accordance-with revised Monitoring and Reporting Program No. 96-814,which was issued on 23 July
1998. The monitoring must also include the NINA parameters, which Chevron has been measuring
during the last couple of years.
Philip Isorena is no longer working on this project.
