1 <br /> ' 4.2 Physical Hazards and Controls <br /> General physical hazards associated with the field activities include encountering utilities, heat <br /> stress, and a variety of hazards as summarized in Tables 3 and 4 Engineering or administrative <br /> ' controls will be used to reduce hazards to Site personnel Personnel are expected to adhere to the <br /> safe work practices as described in Section 5 3 <br /> 1 As the temperature increases, more frequent and longer rest periods are required to prevent heat <br /> ' stress (Table 3) Signs of heat stress include heat rash, heat cramps (muscle spasms, or pain in <br /> extremities), heat exhaustion, and heat stroke Physical condition, level of acclimatization, age, <br /> ' and weight may affect a worker's vulnerability to heat stress Plenty of liquids such as juices, <br /> juice products (i e , Gatorade), and water should be provided to replace lost body fluids Drilling <br /> activities present situations that require controls to minimize hazards Table 4 presents <br /> engineering and administrative controls for identified physical hazards <br /> ' 4.3 Personal Protective Clothing and Equipment <br /> ' The minimum acceptable level of PPE for this project is Level D Modified Level D protection is <br /> required during drilling and sampling activities and where a splash potential (i e , sampling <br /> ' liquids) or handling of potentially contaminated soil exists Personal protective clothing and <br /> equipment for each of the project tasks are summarized in Table 5 <br /> 4.4 Air Monitoring and Site Action Levels <br /> ' Air monitoring equipment shall include a photoionization detector(PID) during drilling and <br /> sampling activities FID monitoring will be conducted in the breathing zones to obtain estimates <br /> 1 of exposure The PID measures total volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and does not usually <br /> ' respond to any particular substance where mixtures may be present The PID instrument shall be <br /> calibrated and properly maintained per the manufacture guidelines Personnel responsible for <br /> 1 <br /> Site Health&Safety Plan 08/14/03 <br /> TREADWELL&ROLLO,INC <br />
