• - r
It is uncertain whether the presence of the petroleum hydrocarbons
is directly related to the lateral migration of contaminants from
the removed waste oil tank or if the contaminants are being
transported through the groundwater and are being adsorbed onto the
both
soils as the groundwater level occurring coincidentalration ly to
transport mechanisms is probably
varying degrees.
Although clean soil was used to back-fill the tank pit, a limited
amount of contamination may have migrated into these soils from the
above-mentioned processes.
It appears that an area of approximately 40 feet by 40 feet in this
portion of the property has been impacted by actionable levels of
petroleum hydrocarbon contamination. Although the low permeability
clays underlying the site may be acting as a retardant to the
, some off- ite soil
lateral and vertical mi, curred, fespecialiy directly contminantsdown-gradient
contamination mayave h
from the waste oil tank pit.
The vertical extent of contamination will vary, depending on the
principle transport mechanism. Contaminated soils were encountered
at a depth of 6-1/2 feet in the vicinity of the removed waste oil
tank during previous environmental work performed at the site. If
n of the contaminants is occurring, then it
simple lateral migratio
may be expected that soil contamination is present at this depth
outside of the tank pit.
