h KLEINFELDER
4 FIELD ACTIVITIES
The field activities described in this report consisted of soil sample collection from the two
shallow excavations, soil sample collection for three borings, the installation of three
tmonitoring wells for the collection of ground water samples, and a survey of the monitoring
well heads
' 41 SOIL SAMPLE COLLECTION, TANK EXCAVATIONS A& B
Four soil samples were collected from two shallow excavations created when the
underground storage tanks were removed. The location of the soil samples are shown on
' Plate 3, in Appendix B. The soil samples were collected from opposite sides in each
excavation, approximately 4 to 4 5 feet below the surface grade.
t in brass tubes using hand collection tools. The brass tubes
Soil samples were collected b g
were sealed with aluminum foil and tight fitting caps, labeled, and placed in an iced cooler
At the end of the drilling operations, these soil samples were delivered under chain-of-
custody to a state certified laboratory Copes of the chain-of-custody documents are
included in Appendix C.
' 4.2 SOIL BORINGS
' Three soil bonngs were drilled to a depth of approximately 25 feet below ground surface
on September 14 and 15, 1988 to collect soil samples and to install three monitoring wells
' Six soil samples, two from each boring, were collected above the first encountered ground
water during drilling First encountered ground water was approximately 5 feet below
' ground surface. Soil samples were also collected for lithologic control at 5 foot intervals
beginning at approximately 10 feet below ground surface. Ground water monitoring wells
were installed in the three soil bonngs after drilling was terminated at a depth of 25 feet
Procedures for collecting soil bonngs are contained in Appendix D.
' During the sample collection an experienced environmental geologist classified the
subsurface sods and logged the boreholes Descriptions of the soil encountered in each soil
boring, and identification of the sample depth and soil type are presented on the Log of
' 145-88-2013 4
