Hiqh TEch ENTERPRISES
12 November 2003 03 NOV 13 PH' 2; OS
To: Mrs. Rosalie Togninali
14500 East Highway 4
Stockton,CA 95215
(209)948-0494 Telephone
(209)401-8923 Cell Phone
From: Edward W.Finucane, PE,QEP,CSP, CIH
Subject: Report#031001.-L-F,concerning the measured levels of toxic chemicals in the two septic
tanks on the property located at:
15420 East Highway 4
Stockton, CA 95215
Sampling of the contents of the two septic tanks on the property listed above was completed on 28
October 2003. The analyses of these samples were completed on 31 October 2003. These sampling
and analytical efforts were accomplished by GeoAnalytical Laboratories,Inc.of Modesto,CA. The
certified results of their analyses have been included in the Appendix to this Report, and have been
identified as GeoAnalytical Laboratories,Inc.Report No.P-301-11. In every case, only exceedingly
low concentration levels of seven different solvent materials were determined to have been present in
these two septic tanks. The following two tabulations provides a summary of all of these non-zero
results:
T_ #1 A—Sotic T k A
No. EPA Method Analyte Detection Limit Actual Results
g31 EPA 150.1 acidity/alkalinity 0.01 pH = 8.50
2 EPA 8260B toluene 1.0 jig/liter 8.3 µg/liter
EPA 8260B trichlorotrifluoroethane 1.0µg/liter 2.1 µg/liter
Table RIB—Sofic Talc B
No. EPA Method Analyte Detection Limit Actual Results
ff2EPA
150.1 acidity/alkalinity 0.01 pH= 7.40
8260B toluene1.0µg/liter 9.3 µg/liter
8260B ethyl benzene 1.0µg/liter 2.0µg/liter
4 EPA 8260B m-&p-xylene(total) 1.0µg/liter 9.3µg/liter
5 EPA 8260B o-xylene 1.0 jig/liter 1.4µg/liter
6 EPA 8260B 1,4-dichlorobenzene 1.0µg/liter 10.0µg/liter
Tests designated under EPA Methods 8260B employ a combination of gas chromatography and
quadruple mass spectrometry. Please note that the units of concentration listed for the various ana-
lytes as results are"µg/liter",a unit that is, in effect, micrograms per kilogram,or,basically, aFP 1r
'll lion 12,y weii -Qr mas . Viewing these results from this perspective,it is clear that none of the.
listed non-zero results from the sampling is sufficiently high to cause any alarm; thus,it is my judg-
ment that no additional remediation on the contents of these tanks is warranted at this time.
In general, the seven chemicals that were determined to have been present in these two septic tanks
appear to me to fall into two separate and distinct categories or classes. Toluene, ethyl benzene, and
all the isomers of xylene are common components of gasoline, while trichlorotrifluoroethane(aka:
Freon 113) and 1,4-dichlorobenzene(aka: p-dichlorobenzene and/or moth crystals) are likely compo-
nents of a variety of different pesticides or herbicides. I would guess that the most likely mechanism
for the transport of these chemicals into these two septic tanks would have been soil diffusion. I
think it is unlikely that they arrived there from any aspect of the manufacture of illicit drugs,particu-
Tclephane: Address:
(209) 473-1113 Fax: (209) 473-1114 Foot Office Box 7835
5tackCon,CA 95267-0835
(800) 221-9595 E-mail:hightachtedOjps.net
