i3.2.1 Locations
Soil borings were placed at locations as shown in Figure 3, Bonngs HA-1 and HA-2
were completed using a hand auger because the depth of the excavation did not
allow for the use of a truck mounted rig within it The excavation slopes toward the
center at a depth of approximately four feet and a dike is placed around the
excavation to minimize the inflow of water from the yard surface into the
excavation The possibility of placing the borings witlun the excavation was
considered to not be feasible after consultation with the drill rig operator Three
borings were placed of which the first ended in gravels at a shallow depth (15') that
could not be penetrated by the hand auger and was not logged The second (HA-1)
poring was placed to a depth of approximately nine feet below grade corresponding
to the soil water interface within the backfill material. The sample indicated visual
and olfactory evidence of the presence of hydrocarbons The third boring (HA-2)
was placed to a depth of approximately 12 feet below grade into the subgrade soils
below the excavation The HA-2 soil sample also provided olfactory and visual
evidence of the presence of hydrocarbons A stronger, more pungent odor
emanated from the HA-2 sample at 12 feet than the nearby HA-1 sample at nine feet
Two borings were placed at location B-1 using eight-inch hollow stem auger in order
to obtain an appropriate soil sample A complete sample was not able to be obtained
at the first location because of sample loss in the sandy material The second boring
was placed one foot to the east of the first boring The second boring obtained a
complete sample from Yviffim the vadose zone at a depth of 7'2"-76" below grade
. Additionally, soil samples were obtained at locations MW-1, P-1 and P-2 Fiorn each
location one sample was taken for analysis from the vadose zone Vadose zone
samples for MW-1, P-1, and P-2 were taken from depths of 9'8", 7'2", ana 62",
respectively Samples taken from the vadose zone were kept for chemical analysis
Additional samples were taken at depths within the saturated zone and were
inspected for visible and olfactory evidence of contamination The deeper samples
revealed no evidence of contamination
Boring logs are included in Appendix D and show pertinent sampling and
geological information
3.2.2 Soil Sampling Methods
Hand auger soil samples were collected by driving the sampling apparatus
containing a decontaminated two-inch diameter brass tube into the soil after bucket
auguring to the appropriate depth The decontamination procedures for driil,ng
operations are described in the following paragraphs.
All soil samples obtained while drilling were collected and handled in accordance
with LUFT guidelines All soil samples were obtained using a two-inch diameter
7
BRUNSING ASSOCIATES, INC
A
