M KLEINFELDER
hydraulically advance a lined steel tube into the ground for the soil borings. Soil samples will be
collected continuously in 5-foot-long butyrate plastic tubes.
The soil samples will be inspected and logged for soil type encountered, screened for petroleum
hydrocarbons using visual and olfactory cues, and checked for volatile organic compounds
(VOCs) using direct reading field instruments. Three unsaturated soil samples will be collected
for chemical analyses from each soil boring at depths of approximately 5 feet, 10 feet, and 15
feet bgs unless field inspection indicates suspected contamination at different depths.
Soil samples will be collected by cutting the tubes at the desired depth and covering the ends
with Teflonrm sheets and caps. The tubes will be labeled and placed in a cooler with water-
based ice for transport to the laboratory under chain-of-custody (COC) procedures. The two
upper samples from each boring will be analyzed initially depending on field indications of
potential chemical impacts. The third sample will be held at the laboratory pending the results of
the initial soil samples. Soil samples will not be collected from beneath the water table.
We will collect one reconnaissance groundwater sample from approximately 5 feet beneath the
water table (estimated to be at approximately 40 feet bgs). Slotted polyvinyl chloride (PVC)
screen and blank casing will be inserted in the boring to hold it open during sampling. A clean
disposable bailer will be used to sample water from the boring, and the water sample decanted
into appropriate laboratory-supplied containers. The sample containers will be labeled,
information entered onto the COC form, and the samples placed on ice in a cooler for transport
to the analytical laboratory.
A State-certified analytical laboratory will analyze a maximum of 9 soil samples and 1
reconnaissance groundwater sample for the following standard parameters:
• Volatile total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPH-g) using U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency(EPA) Test Method 8015,modified;
• Extractable TPH as diesel fuel (TPH-d) and motor oil (TPH-mo) using EPA Test
Method 8015, modified, with silica gel cleanup; and
• Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and total xylenes (BTEX); methyl tertiary-butyl
ether (MTBE) and four other fuel oxygenate compounds (FOCs) using EPA Test
Method 8260.
Laboratory turnaround time will be accelerated to two working days (48-hours).
Upon completion of the sampling tasks, the rods and/or temporary PVC casing will be removed
and the borings grouted from bottom to the ground surface with neat cement grout consisting of
one 94-pound sack of cement mixed with approximately 5 to 6 gallons of clean water. The
surface at each boring will be repaired to match the existing surface. Investigation-derived waste
(IDW), such as soil cuttings and wash water, will be contained in 55-gallon steel drums with
tight fitting lids, labeled and left onsite for later disposal pending the results of laboratory
analyses.
34067 2 - D 2003 Kleinfelder,Inc.
