Margaret Lagorio [EHI
From: Amy Terrell [aterrell@waterboards.ca.gov]
Sent: Thursday, November 09, 2006 5:29 PM
To: (huff@huffnhuff.com
Cc: rmarty@advgeoenv.com; Dan.Decker@conti.com; avanwaning@huffnhuff.com;
jhuff@huffnhuff.com;jreynolds@huffnhuff.com; Margaret Lagorio [EH]
Subject: 9405 harlan rd workplan
Linda,
I've received the 26 October 2006 work plan for the installation of one soil boring at the
Continental Grain facility at 9405 Harlan Road.
The work plan calls for obtaining 4 soil samples from a single boring for the purpose of
obtaining subsurface soil characteristics to fine tune the groundwater model that you are
developing for the site. The work plan calls for obtaining the soil samples from Shelby
Tubes, which are thin walled open ended soil sample tubes that obtain undisturbed soil
cores. The boring will be advanced to about 90 feet bgs. The boring will be advanced
through two water-bearing zones. In the vicinity of the proposed boring (between MW-10B
and MW-4B) both the first and the second water-bearing zone contain chloroform and carbon
tetrachloride (CCL4) . The second zone contains higher concentrations of CCL4 than the
first, and both zones contain similar concentrations of chloroform.
Regional Water Quality Control Board staff conditionally concur with the proposed work
plan subject to the following 2 conditions:
1. Grouting shall be achieved by tremie grouting while the auger bits are being removed.
The auger shall not be removed before grout is placed.
2 . In addition to the proposed analyses of the soil samples, please record visual
observations with an eye for indications of iron staining, sulfide deposits, or other
indicators of reducing conditions relating to the zero valent iron injection.
We look forward to seeing the resultant groundwater model and the supporting subsurface
soil analyses.
If you have any questions, you may contact me by phone at (916) 464-4680 or by email at
aterrell@waterboards.ca.gov.
Amy Terrell
Regional Water Quality Control Board, Central Valley Region
11020 Sun Center Drive
Rancho Cordova, CA 95670-6114
>>> "Linda Huff" <lhuff@huffnhuff.com> 11/9/2006 11:11 AM >>>
Amy,
We are planning to collect some Shelby tube samples next week to confirm
the permeability of the soils within the different zones at French Camp.
The ground water modeling has been completed but we think this would be
helpful in substantiating the model results. San Joaquin County has
been reluctant to issue the permit for the Shelby tubes because of Water
Board involvement.
Could you please email or call San Joaquin County to let them know this
activity is acceptable? I have attached information regarding the
location of the proposed Shelby tubes.
1
