1612 Hammer Lane Page 2
I
On March 9, 1993, during drilling of B18, pea gravel was encountered. The soil boring was
then relocated approximately 9 feet to the east. The following day a piping leak was
discovered; however, approximately 78 gallons had already leaked into the adjacent soil.
The fractured piping was subsequently repaired. To evaluate the impact, a soil sample was
collected on March 11, 1993 at 6 feet below ground surface, the results of which indicated
soil contamination of up to 39,000 ppm TPH-gas, 660,000 ppb benzene, 2,400,000 ppb
toluene, 570,000 ppb ethylbenzene, and 3, 100,000 ppb xylene. An additional vapor
extraction well was proposed in this area.
The soil cuttings stockpiled on site were sampled on March 29, 1993. No contamination was
detected above the laboratory's reported limit.
Groundwater samples were collected from the newly installed MW5 on March 29, 1993.
Groundwater contamination was detected up to 930 ppb TPH-gas, 16 ppb benzene, 1.9 ppb
ethylbenzene, and 9.7 ppb xylene. MW5 was installed to provide a downgradient well to
determine the extent of groundwater contamination. An additional groundwater monitoring
well will be necessary to define the plume of contamination.
Please submit by August 31, 1993 a work plan to continue the investigation.
If you have any questions, comments, or wish to schedule a site inspection, please contact
Mary Meays, Senior REHS, at (209) 468-0337.
Jogi Khanna, M.D., M.P.H.
Health Officer
Donna Heran, REHS, Program Manager
Environmental Health Division
LAC/MM:lb
c: Elizabeth Thayer, CVRWQCB
c: Jay Johnson, RESNA
