sa
S
•
APPENDIX
FIELD PROCEDURES
Safety Plan
This plan describes the basic safety requirements for the subsurface environmental investigation
related to monitoring the removal of the product lines and excavation of soil at the site The Site
Safety Plan is applicable to personnel of EMCON Personnel scheduled to work at the site will be
briefed on the contents of the Site Safety Plan before work begins A copy of the Site Safety Plan
will be kept at the work site and will be available for reference by appropriate parties during work
at the site The geologist from EMCON will be the Site Safety Officer
Sampling Beneath the Underground Storage Tanks and Product
Delivery Lines
. Soil samples collected from underneath the former tanks and product delivery lines will be
obtained by driving a hand-operated percussion sampler fitted with a clean brass sleeve into the
sort or immediately after it is brought to the surface in the excavator bucket The sleeve will be
removed from the sampler and sealed promptly with Teflon`"' tape and plastic caps
A PID will be used to evaluate the presence of hydrocarbon vapors in soil samples Field
instruments, such as the PID, are useful for indicating relative levels of hydrocarbon vapors but do
not detect the concentration of hydrocarbons present with the same precision as laboratory
analyses
Sampling of Stockpiled Soil
Soil samples will be collected from the stockpiled soil by driving a hand-operated percussion
sampler fitted with a clean brass sleeve into the stockpiled soil The sleeve will be removed from
the sampler and promptly sealed with Teflon tape and plastic caps The sample will then be
labeled and placed in iced storage Chain-of-custody records will be initiated by the geologist and
accompany the samples to the analytical laboratory Pending the analytical results of the soil
samples, Dillard Trucking of Byron, California, will arrange for disposal of the drill cuttings at an
appropriate disposal facility
SAC\N\PIM805\08051400 3 DS-95 pas l A-1 Rev 0 7/23/96
