Ms. Vicki McCartney,SJCEHD August 29,2008
Work Plan for Bench-Scale Test and Injection Well Installation Project No.2046-3250-01
Parkinson's I-5 ARCO Service Station,Stockton,California
Page 8
Task 21): Surveying
A California licensed land surveyor will be retained to survey the latitude, longitude, and
elevation (to 0.01 foot vertical accuracy) of newly installed wells IW-1 and IW-2. The survey
will be tied to the previous survey conducted at the site in March 2008. Survey data will be
submitted to the SWRCB's GeoTracker database.
Task 2E: Soil Sample Laboratory Analyses
Soil samples collected during this investigation will be forwarded to Alpha Analytical, Inc., a
California, state-certified analytical laboratory (ELAP #2019), for chemical analyses under
chain-of-custody procedures. The-Vamples will be analyzed for GRO using USEPA Method
8015 DHS LUFT, and for BTEX, MTBE, TBA, TAME, ethyl tertiary butyl ether (ETBE), di-
isopropyl ether (DIPE), dibromoethane (EDB), and 1,2-dichlooethane (1,2-DCA) using USEPA
Method 8260B.
Task 3: 03/1-12O2 Bench-Scale Testing
Stratus will retain the services of Prima Environmental Inc. (Prima), of El Dorado Hills,
California to perform the bench-scale testing. During the advancement of soil borings IW-1 and
IW-2 (see task 2), Stratus will collect approximately 10 pounds (4.5 kilograms) of soil and
forward it to Prima. In addition, approximately 15 liters of groundwater will be bailed from
monitoring wells MW-1 and MW-2 (combined) and also forwarded to Prima. Testing and
monitoring protocol are provided below.
Task 3A: Test Protocol
A small amount of material (soil then groundwater) is added to 03-saturated water; the 03
concentration in the water over time is then measured using the indigo method to estimate 03
usage/demand. A control 03-saturated water (in which no material is added) is also tested over
time. The longevity of H2O2, in the presence of soil and groundwater will be estimated by
combining the soil, groundwater, and H2O2 in a 2:1 soil to liquid ratio, then measuring the rate at
which off-gasses are generated. The test will be repeated for a minimum of three ranges of H2O2
concentrations. A third test will be performed in 5 reactors containing soil and groundwater
mixture from the site. Two of the reactors will be mixed for 20 minutes and analyzed for
petroleum hydrocarbons. The next two reactors will each be dosed with a predetermined
quantity of 03 (40 milligrams [mg] 03/liter oxygen) at a flow rate of 50 milliliters per minute
(mL/min) for 24 hours. Off-gasses will be collected in a tedlar bag. At the end of the test, the--
reactors and periodic off-gasses in tedlar bags will be analyzed for petroleum hydrocarbons-,The
last two reactors will be used as controls. These will also be tested for petroleum hydrocarbons.
This reactor test will be used to identify if 03+H2O2 will reduce petroleum hydrocarbons. The
aqueous samples from the reactors will also be analyzed for secondary water quality parameters
such as metals (Al, As/, Ba, Ca, Cr, Crvi, Cu, K, Mg, Mil, and Ni), ammonia, nitrogen, bromate, L
Aisso)v4 I'r
i{V
1
K:\Parkinsons Hammer I-5 Arco\Work Plans\Work Plan for Ozone Bench Scale Test.doc 1, j .y+►
