PUBLIC F-ALTH SERVICES N R
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH DIVISION
Karen Furst, M.D., M.P.H., Health Officer
304 East Weber Avenue, Third Floor Stockton, CA 93202 P
• q<i pQ'R
209/468-3420
SEP 2 5 M.
To Whom It May Concem
ANALYSIS REQUIRED FOR OXYGENATE COMPOUNDS
San Joaquin County Public Health Services, Environmental Health Division (PHS/EHD) is under
Local Oversight Program (LOP) contract with the Califomia State Water Resources Control
Board (SWRCS) to provide oversight for the investigation and cleanup of unauthorized releases
from underground storage tanks. This contract includes a provision for technical support by the
Califomia Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board (CVRWQCB).
PHS/EHD has recently received a letter from the CVRWQCS that provides guidance on how to
analyze for the oxygenated compounds in gasoline until a "definitive protocol" can be
established. Based on this letter, PHS/EHD is directing you to analyze samples from all of
your monitoring wells for Tertiary Butyl Alcohol (TBA), Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether(MTBE), Di-
isopropyl ether(DIPE),-Ethyl Tertiary Butyl Ether(ETBE) and Tertiary Amyl Methyl Ether
(TAME) by EPA method 8260. PHS/EHD will require analysis of samples for Methanol and
Ethanol where there is reason to believe that these compounds were stored in the underground
tank(s).
PHS/EHD requires quarterly sampling of all wells where the presence of oxygenates is
confirmed by EPA method 8260. Modification of this required sampling such as number of wells
sampled, sampling frequency and method of analysis may be granted only after initial sample
results are reviewed by PHS/EHD. Any modification of the required sampling must have
PHS/EHD approval prior to implementation.
For additional information please call your LOP contact.
Donna Heran, REHS, Director
Environmental Health Division
—M
Margaret Lagorio, REHS
LOP Supervisor
encl.
A Division of San Joaquin County Health Care Services
