The data collected from this well indicate the levels of
contaminants have been decreasing over time.
To complement the data being collected from the monitoring wells at this site, the
degree of residual soil contamination remaining at the site also must be compiled.
The full extent of the soil contamination left behind after the completion of the
excavation must be evaluated and presented in cross sections of the site. The total
remaining mass volume of contamination must be calculated and evaluated for future
threat to groundwater. Soil and groundwater fate and transport modelling may be
needed to evaluate and predict any potential future impacts to groundwater and the
long term fate of the contaminants in the subsurface.
This information should be used to determine if the soil contamination at the site can
remain in place without further mitigation or whether additional remediation is needed.
This determination should be based on current State of California water quality
policies, which require cleanup to original background levels. A closure or no further
action recommendation may be justified if your evaluation indicates background levels
will be ultimately achieved over time.
Also, you may wish to add monitoring for concentrations of carbon dioxide to the
quarterly monitoring protocol at this site. This data would provide an indication of
A Division of San .Joaquin County Health Care Services
