The
auger and other tools used in the hole will be steam-cleaned before use to minimize the
possibility of cross-contamination.
Relatively undisturbed soil samples will be collected at 5-foot-depth intervals using a
modified California split-spoon sampler equipped with three internal brass tubes, each 5
-- inches long and 2 inches in diameter. The sampler will be advanced 18 inches into
_i undisturbed soil Ivith a 140-pound hammer. All soil cuttiltgs from the drilling will be
placed on and covered with plastic sheeting and left at the site. Once analytical results
are known, the soil can be disposed of properly by Quik Stop,
{ After recovery from the borehole the sampler will be disassembled and one sample
liner will be preserved for chemical analysis in the fallowing manner. Both ends of the
liner will be covered with aluminum foil and a plastic cap. It will then be labeled with
_ a uinque sample number and pertinent sample information, placed in a plastic ziploc
i bag, entered on a chain-of-custody form, and packed in a chilled ice chest for transport
-' to a laboratory certified by the State of California. See Appendix A for the Exceltech
! soil sampling protocol and laboratory procedures,
" The geologist will prepare a log of the subsurface conditions encountered during
drilling and will classify the soils according to the Unified Soil Classification System
and Munsell Soil Color Charts. All drilling logs will be reviewed by a certified
engineering geologist.
71
g g g
!. Groundwater Monitoring Well Construction
After the soil sampling is completed, Exceltech will install aoundwat
well to each exploratory borehole. Exceltech will construct bre monitoring wells to
. accordance with all permit requirements of San Joaquin County.
h 3 The wells will be constructed of'2-inch-diameter, Schedule 40,flush-threaded 1
yvinyr
chloride (AVC) blank and slotted casing; no glues or solvents will be used. Afterl
drilling the boring to the desired depth, the PVC casing
t hollow-stem auger. The screened interval of the asing will "tend sl be ufficith
end roughthe
ry y e
the water table so that the presence of free floating product can be investigated. As the
auger is withdrawn, sand will be slowly poured down the borehole annulus to
j ow approximetely 2 feet above the slotted screen section. Bentonite pellets will be placed
! or spa top of the sand and hydrated to form an annular seal. The remaining portion ortion of the
r annulaace will be..sealed-with.a neat,cement-and bfmtonite-grout:- The'top of ttie
11 Will be set in .a waterproof traffic-rated vault box slightly above grade with a
locking cover to provide security and protect the PVC wellhead. A concrete surface
seal will be installed to complete the well construction.
t
