1. INTRODUCTION
At the request of Chevron U.S.A.Inc.,EA has assessed soil and groundwater conditions and
outlined further investigation and remedial action at former Chevron Service Station(SS)9-1918
in Stockton, California. This work plan briefly summarizes the results of the investigation to
date, describes the present hydrogeologic conditions at the site, and outlines the procedure to
install a groundwater monitoring well to further define the extent of the dissolved petroleum
hydrocarbons found under the site.
1.1 LOCATION AND SITE SETTING
Former Chevron SS 9-1918 is located at 45 East Harding Way,on the northwest corner of the
intersection of Harding Way and El Dorado Street(Figure 1). The vacant and unimproved site is
located three miles east of Interstate 5 and less than one mile west of the State Hospital complex
at Harding Way and California Street. Gasoline products were actively dispensed and automo-
biles were serviced at this site between 1953 and 1988. In 1984,the original station was remod-
eled and fiberglass underground fuel storage tanks were installed. The station was deactivated
and demolished early in 1988,and the fiberglass underground storage tanks were excavated and
removed on 24 February of that year.
1.2 SITE DESCRIPTION
The site of the former Chevron SS 9-1918 is surrounded by a residential area to the north and
west(Figure 2). To the south and east of the site are commercial and retail businesses. There is
a Shell service station east of the site across El Dorado Street and a restaurant to the south across
East Harding Way. Southeast, across the intersection,is a Regal service station.
The site is approximately 0.7 miles north of McLeod Lake, about 1.2 miles south of the Calav-
eras River, and about 0.7 miles east of Yosemite Lake at the end of the Smith Canal (see
Figure 1). The site is at an elevation of approximately 12 feet above mean sea level and grades
gently to the east at about 8 feet per mile(0.0017).
1
=Bill I MINI
c7Q91918f41 -
