4.0 Reporting
Reporting for this remedial action will occur initially 3 years after remedial action imple-
mentation. The next evaluation will occur at 5 years after implementation and then at 5-year
intervals thereafter.
4.1 3-Year Review
A 3-year review will be performed as an interim assessment of the status of this remedial
action. At 3 years the criteria for success of phytoremediation will be the health of each
poplar grove. It is not anticipated that significant changes to groundwater or soil will take
place until the grove is fully established (approximately 4 years). Therefore,no additional
groundwater or soil sampling will be performed as part of the 3-year review. The annual
groundwater monitoring reports will provide time concentration plots of the groundwater
quality from the existing wells and piezometers. An overall assessment of the health of the
trees will be performed. The assessment will provide a written documentation of the health
of each grove and provide recommendations for upgrading or modifying the maintenance
of the trees,if needed. It is anticipated that by the time of the 3-year review the poplar
groves will no longer require irrigation.
A report will be prepared to summarize the findings of the 3-year review and to describe
potential upgrades to the system(if any are proposed).
4.2 5-Year Review
The 5-year review will consist of a follow-up evaluation of tree health and an evaluation of
groundwater data. The criteria for success of phytoremediation at 5 years are:
• Established groves of mature poplar trees
• An indication that nitrogen concentrations in the groundwater continue to be stable
The trees will be assessed to verify that the poplar groves are maturing and established, and
to provide any additional recommendations for upgrades.
Groundwater quality data will be evaluated. Time-concentration plots will be presented to
evaluate trends in nitrogen concentrations for the first 5 years. Soil sampling will be per-
formed and the soil will be analyzed for the constituents discussed above.
Findings of the 5-year review will be presented in a report. Changes or modifications to the
sampling frequency will be discussed if appropriate. If the poplar groves are not fully
established or if groundwater concentrations do not show any indication of stabilization,
options for contingency(presented below)will be included in the report as well.
The 5-year review will also evaluate the possibility of changing the frequency of sampling
from semi-annuals to annual sampling.
' RDD/00367D317.DOC(CAH710.DOC) 16
