a
Kevin Allen
Tage 2
j
:The Vertical Went of the soil contamination in the area directly beneath the farmer tank and the quality of
dile groundwater beneath the farmer tank still need to be investigated. Additional soil borings and monitoring
wells are needed to adequately assess the groundwater conditions. A minimum of three monitoring wells are
:used to obtain groundwater samples and also to monitor the groundwater for gradient and flaw direction
ainformation. The wells will also provide information on any influence the production and domestic wells in
the Aso may have on the groundwater flowl patterns.
'Additionally, for a complete investigation,a monitoring well must be located in each down gradient direction
identified:for this site.
.The installation of monitoring wells at this site is technically feasible, In San Joaquin County.there are many
'monitoring wells constructed to depths greater than 90 feet below ground surface(BGS), T the completion of
xrtonitvring well M'4V#1 to a:maximum of 90' BGS was due to the lack of adequate auger lengths at the site
at the time of the drilling.
PHS/EHD will use the information generated from this work to evaluate whether the contatri ttatictn formthe
former diesel tank is an actual and/or, potential threat to groundwater. PHS/EHD cannot make this
determination without this information.
Benzene is a known carcinogen And:is a constituent Lound in some diesel:t%baures. It is the Mbgt mobile of
the aromatic constituents.: and the detection of benzene in wells may indicate a migratWg edge!,of-a:
contaminant plume: Therefore, it is essential thatthe levels of contamination in the domestic we1tS` be.
monitored:on a:regulair basis. Until the quality of the groundwater beneath the former:diesel tank is
determined, the tank pit:area is:tottsidered to be a possible Source to the etntamination found.in:.tlte domestic
'Wells located: neatby,
"Ile workplan o:investigate the above noted areas of concern shall be submitted by August 25,1"3.
if you have anyyquestions or comments regarding this letter, please contact Linda Turkatte,Senior REFS,of
guy staff at(om):468-moi.
]'trg ;Iastria,ll+I,11tiPH.
Hltlt:fftr ,
J
t
urie A..Cotulla,RENS,Program Manager I
Environmental.Health Division I
.0
V
j:4 CMW., M"'Elizabeth.Thayer
c: Wilson,:Sonsitti:floodt •Debra Summers
''I'wo::Palo.:cito auto
P61o.Alto,,CA 945W, c
C
t ,: s
