09 May 1996
AGE-NC Project No. 96-0217
custody documentation will be presented in a report with the findings and recommendations.
4.0. PROCEDURES
4.1. DRILLING AND SAMPLING
The following procedures will be performed for the drilling and installation of soil borings and
monitoring wells:
1. Notify the PHS-EHD 48 hours prior to commencement of any work, while securing proper
city/county soil boring permits. Prepare a Site Health and Safety Plan.
2. Boring locations will be marked at least 48 hours in advance for an Underground Service
Alert (USA) check of underground utilities or pipes.
1 Advance one(1) soil boring, using a truck-mounted drill rig equipped with 8.25-inch diameter
hollow stem augers. The boring will be advanced to a depth of approximately 15 feet bsg.
4. Collect soil samples at five-foot intervals from each boring, beginning at 5 feet bsg, utilizing
a California split-spoon sampler and pre-cleaned 2-inch by 6-inch brass sleeves.
5. Advance four (4) soil borings near the former dispenser and pump island areas. One soil
sample will be collected from each boring at a depth of approximately three to five feet bsg.
6. Preserve soil in the lead brass sleeve by covering both ends with Teflon sheets, capping, and
sealing with tape.
7. Decontaminate all augers and sampling equipment in an alconox solution and rinse twice with
water prior to each sampling run. Steam-clean auger flights before advancement of each
boring.
8. Soil samples will be stored in a chilled container and transported to a State-certified
laboratory for analysis.
9. Screen soil sample duplicates for the presence of volatile organics using a photo-ionization
detector (PID) pre-calibrated to isobutylene.
I0. Log borings in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System.
11. Selected soil samples will be analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as gasoline
(TPH-g), volatile aromatics (benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene and xylenes: BTE&X) and
methyl-tert butyl ether (MTBE) in accordance with the EPA methods 5030/8015, 8020 and
8020, respectively.
12. Cuttings and rinseate generated during drilling activities will be containerized in properly
