09 May 1996
AGE-NC Project No. 96-0217
3.0. SCOPE OF WORK
3.1. DRILLING AND SAMPLING
Based upon the analytical results of samples collected during the removal of the USTs in 1988, the
PHS-EHD is requiring additional investigaiton of the site to determine the lateral and vertical extent
of hydrocarbon-impacted soil and ground water.
Initially, AGE proposes to install one ground water monitoring well north of the former UST
excavation. Four shallow borings will also be drilled near the former former dispenser and piping
areas. Proposed well and soil boring locations are illustrated in Figure 2.
The boring will be advanced to approximately 15 feet utilizing a truck mounted, hollow stem drill rig
and 8.25-inch hollow-stem augers. Soil samples will be collected at five-foot intervals beginning at
a depth of 5 feet bsg in each boring. Samples will be collected using a California split-spoon sampler
and brass sleeves. Samples will be driven by dropping a 140-pound weight from a height of 30
inches. The number of blows required to drive each 6-inch length of the sampler (blow counts) will
be recorded on boring logs by an AGE staff geologist.
Upon sample retrieval, the middle brass sleeve will be removed from the sampler. The ends of the
sleeve will be immediately covered with Teflon tape, sealed with plastic end caps, secured with tape
and immediately placed under ice in a chilled container for transportation to a State-certified
laboratory. Soil sample duplicates samples will be screened in the field for the presence of organic
vapors (OVs) using a photo-ionization detector. Each soil sample sleeve will be labeled with the
following: boring location, depth, time, date and sampler's initials.
3.2. EQUIPMENT DECONTAMINATION
All sampling tools and brass sleeves used for sample collection will be thoroughly rinsed with clean
water after washing with a solution of Alconox. All Geoprobe rods are cleaned prior to advancement
in each probing location.
3.3. LABORATORY ANALYSIS
Selected soil and ground water samples will be analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified
as gasoline (TPH-g), volatile aromatic hydrocarbons (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and total
xylenes: BTE&X and methyl-tert-butyl ether (MTBE) in accordance with EPA methods 8015/5030,
8020/602 and 8020/602, respectively. Laboratory reports of both soil and ground water analyses,
testing methods, laboratory quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) reports, and sample chain of
