PERMIT/SERVICES
50 Beale Street
San Francisco, CA 94119-3965
14 MARCH 1994 TELEPHONE CONVERSATION, NESTLE BEVERAGE COMPANY, SAN
JOAQUIN COUNTY
We have received your Contact Report of our 14 March 1994 telephone conversation regarding the
Nestle Beverage Company site in Ripon. Our review of the Report found several inaccuracies. The
following text more accurately reflects my statements. We have enclosed the original Contact
Report.
Since 1985, Nestle Beverage Co. (Nestle) has conducted six investigations of the site. In
February 1991, Nestle submitted the report on the phase VI investigation. In February 1994,
Nestle submitted a Remedial Investigation (RI) Report in accordance with Cleanup and
Abatement Order (CAO) No. 93-712, issued by the Central Valley Regional Water Quality
Control Board (Board) on 29 October 1993. Nestle remains in compliance with the CAO.
Victor Izzo is the current Board project manager of the site.
The Nestle site is considered by the Board to be a source of trichloroethylene (TICE)
contamination in ground water. Spillage from an above ground tank, formerly located in the
decaffeination building, is considered to be the on-site source of the TCE contamination.
Exfiltration from the off-site sewer line may also be a source of the contamination. There is
no documented use of perchloroethylene (PCE) on-site. Nestle is closing the Ripon facility
in April 1994.
If you have any questions, please call me at (916) 255-3069.
Camilla Williams
Engineering Geologist
CKW:cw
Enclosure
cc: Department of Toxic Substances Control, Region 1, Sacramento
Ms. Laurie Cotulla, Public Health Services of San Joaquin County, Environmental
Health Division, Stockton
Dr. Walter Carey, Nestle USA, New Milford, Connecticut
Ms. Sara Black, RUST Environment & Infrastructure, Englewood, Colorado
