Linda Turkatte of the San Joaquin County Public Health Services Environmental Health Division
provided verbal approval to spread the 25 cubic yards of excavated soil in an open area previously
used to aerate gasoline contaminated soil.
A copy of the excavation sampling report was submitted to and reviewed by the Environmental
Health Division. Ms. Turkatte has requested a mass fuel oil calculation to determine the amount
of fuel oil present in the excavated soil spread at the site and in the soil remaining in the backfilled
excavation. This letter report presents Kleinfelders calculations, assumptions, and estimate of fuel
oil present in the soil based on the results of the excavation and stockpile sampling.
Fuel oil was detected at 51 mg/kg in the stockpiled soil and at 51 mg/kg at the bottom of!the
excavation. The volume of excavated soil is known (25 cubic yards), therefore it is possible to
calculate the fuel oil mass in the excavated soil. The assumptions and calculations for the fuel oil
mass in the excavated soil are as follows:
FUEL OII.MASS EXCAVATED SOIL
Assumptions:
1. Soil stockpile: 675 cubic feet(ftp)
2. Average soil composition: Silty sand
3. Average specific gravity: G = 2.66
4. Average void ratio: 1 = 1.25
S. Average porosity: n = 0.56 or 56%
6. Density of soil. p = 110 (7hy?)
7. kg/lbs conversion: I kg = 2.2046 lbs
Calculations:
Volume of soil:
n = 0.56 Porosity
Vr = 675 (ftp) Total affected sail volume
{ KI = n(Vd = 378 (ftp) Total void volume in soil
VS = Vr- Vv = 297 (ft 3) Volume of affected soil
Mass of Affected Soil Stockpile-
P(V)
tock ile-PVV)
msorr =110( Ib (297 ft3k .0kg
= 14,819.0(kgs,,)
l
Y-2-04-61b)
msorr = 14,819 (kgs-;)
! i
a
i
24-220152-GOO/CR38-28 (1994) Page 2 of 5 June 7, 1994
Copyright 1994 Kieir&lder,Inc.
KLEINFELDER 2240 Northpoint Parkway, Santa Kosa, CA 05407 (707) 571-1883
L
