GROUND WATER MONITORING WORK PLAN
DREDGE MATERIAL DISPOSAL SITE 1,ROBERTS ISLAND,PORT OF STOCKTON
drum, labeled appropriately, and stored on-site for future disposal. Results of soil and ground
water sample analyses may be used to identify appropriate disposal facilities.
3.1.3 Task 3 —Sample Analyses
This task specifies and provides the rationale for the variety of analyses to be performed on the
samples collected in Task 2. Laboratory analyses of the samples will address the objectives of
this Work Plan by examining:
■ Geochemical characteristics of the dredge sediments and associated water,
■ Attenuation capacity of the underlying foundation soil and peat,
■ Water quality and geochemical characteristics of water in peat and shallow aquifer
beneath the dredge materials,
■ Water quality and geochemical characteristics of water in the adjacent San Joaquin River
and Burns Cutoff,
■ Geochemical and isotopic signatures of surface water and water in the dredged
materials, peat, and sandy aquifer;isotopic signatures are likely to be effective tracers
for water movement from the surface waters and dredge sediments to the underlying
peat and sandy aquifer.
Accordingly, the analytical work proposed here will allow the assessment of:
■ Geochemical and waste characteristics of the dredge materials in DMD1,
■ Chemical processes important to the release, transport, and attenuation within the
dredge sediments and underlying foundation soils,
■ Local water migration pathways and the locations of possible zones of water mixing,
■ Background ground water quality,
■ Efficacy of prior applications of lime to the dredge materials.
The following summarizes the purpose and utility of the analytical methods to be performed on
samples collected at the Site. Prior to analysis, the laboratory will first thoroughly mix each
sample of geologic media to minimize heterogeneities within the sample matrix. Table 3 is a
matrix of analyses to be performed on the samples.
■ Water potential—measures the tension between the water and the soil surface. Low
water tension(less than 1/3 Bar) corresponds to saturated conditions. Stronger
January 2005 Page 13 Environmental Risk Services,Corp.
