Kennedy/Jenks Consultants
Section 3. Proposed Groundwater Monitoring Well Purpose
and Locations {1
The primary objective of the proposed groundwater monitoring wells is to characterize ambient `r
groundwater underlying the proposed expanded LAAs. Four additional monitoring wells are
proposed to be installed in the first-encountered groundwater. All four wells will be placed infield I
with respect to the new LAAs. The proposed locations are shown on Figure 4. The new r
monitoring wells will: (1) furnish water quality data for groundwater beneath the new LAAs to
inform intrawell statistical analyses, (2) permit estimation of the local groundwater gradient, and
(3) allow characterization of lithology at greater depth than has been evaluated in past site IT
characterization activities to better constrain local groundwater flow.
3.1 Purpose of Monitoring Wells
Ii
The proposed groundwater monitoring wells will allow Sutter Home to characterize and monitor
groundwater underlying the proposed expanded new LAAs to the west of the winery facility. t
There are two principal reasons for characterizing groundwater conditions: !
• First, ambient groundwater conditions have not been fully characterized beneath the ,
proposed additional new LAAs. Ambient groundwater quality in the vicinity of the new LAAs 51
may have been impacted by past activities, such as application of manure fertilizer.
Although reconnaissance groundwater samples were collected in January 2013 for
laboratory analysis, the samples were not collected from properly installed and developed
monitoring wells with well screens selected for the site-specific soil conditions. Moreover, the
reconnaissance samples were collected during a single event, and monitoring wells will
allow characterization of temporal variations.
• Second, the proposed monitoring wells will allow Sutter Home to monitor potential impacts
(if any) to groundwater as the new land application system is expanded becomes
operational to the west of the facility into the northern portions of the facility.
The set of four new monitoring wells proposed in this Work Plan will serve both purposes
identified above. In addition, the wells will be used to estimate the local groundwater gradient r1
and thus aid in understanding the hydraulic interaction of groundwater and the nearby slough
system. Finally, one soil boring will be advanced to greater depth than prior soil borings and well
installations to log a thicker section of the underlying lithology. The lithology data will be used to
quantify the extent of high- and low-permeability materials beneath the site to better constrain
overall aquifer transmissivity.
i
<; r
ai
Page 8 Monitoring Well Installation Work Plan
Sutter Home Winery, Lodi, California _
g_gmuc*bwewasoos- xta [i
