1
KLEINFELDER
1 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
' Kleinfelder was requested by San Joaquin County to assess the soil for the presence of
petroleum hydrocarbons at two underground storage tank sites at the San Joaquin General
Hospital One of the sites (tank Tl) was in use at the time of the request, but had failed a
' recent tank test; while the other site (tank 72) had not been used in many years and was
scheduled for closure to allow for construction
This report presents the results of Klemfelder s soil assessment in the vicinity of the two
tank sites. Because the tanks had been installed in the 1940's and accurate drawings of the
tank locations were not available, and the prevalence of utility lines in the general viciruty
'
of the tanks, a geophysical survey was conducted on September 19, 1991 to locate the two
tanks The geophysical survey indicated the presence of a third tank (13) adjacent to T2
Based on the findings of the geophysical survey and limited access, one vertical boring was
drilled at each end of Tl, one slant boring was drilled beneath tank T2 and one slant boring
was drilled beneath tank T3 Five soil samples were submitted for quantitative analysis
from the T1 site, and four soil samples were submitted from the T2/T3 site The samples
' were analyzed for total extractable petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH), purgeable TPH,
benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX); ethylene dibromide (EDB), and
total lead
Samples submitted from tank T1 did not contain extractable TPH, purgeable TPH, BTEX,
' or EDB concentrations above the laboratory reporting limits Lead was detected above the
reporting limit in three of the five samples submitted, however, the concentrations are
below current regulatory requirements Kleinfelder recommends no further assessment of
the soil in the vicinity of tank Tl
The two deepest samples submitted from the two borings at site T2/73 were reported to
contain extractable TPH, purgeable TPH, and lead A low concentration of xylenes was
' detected in one of the deep samples EDB was not reported in the two deep samples
Lead concentrations were detected in the four samples at concentrations below current
' regulatory levels.
FR25-91-29 Page 1 of 11
' Copyright 1991 Kleinfelder,Inc
