yUbU-JJ4 Un-4
screened at 49 to 59 feet BGS, showed TCE at 1.2 ug/l in the last sampling
round, 1988, and LM 34, at 59-69 feet, showed both TCE and PCE at levels
just above the detection limits. Shallow well , LM 43, about 200 feet
directly upgradient from Contaminant Area 3, has never shown TCE or PCE in
samples collected in 1986, 1987, and 1988. Thus, it appears the solvents
in and downgradient of Contaminant Area 3 derive from leaks and spills from
drums of solvents stored and handled in Contaminant Area 3.
4.3.6.4 Contaminant Area 4. There are two shallow wells in Contaminant
Area 4, LM 26 on the upgradient side and LM 17 on the downgradient side.
Well LM 26, sampled in 1986 and 1988, has shown PCE only at concentrations
below action levels. Well LM 17, installed just north of Building 28, has
shown both TCE and PCE in the 25-40 ug/l range in sampling rounds in 1986
and 1988. Deeper wells installed just downgradient of LM 17 in 1990 showed
neither TCE nor PCE above detection limits. The one soil boring in the
Contaminant Area, SB 22, showed neither TCE nor PCE above detection
limits. Two soil gas samples near LM 17 and SB 22 both showed total
halocarbons above 50 ug/l (mostly PCE) . Two upgradient soil gas samples,
SV 91 and SV 94, both showed PCE at 29 ug/l . The suspected source of the
contamination found around Well LM 17 is the former sump at the recoup
facility in Building 28. The source of the upgradient PCE is unknown. The
airphotos reviewed (Appendix 0) do not show drum storage in this area. The
most likely source is believed to be undocumented spills arising from the
use of solvents on the Depot.
4.3.6.5 Contaminant Area 5. There is one shallow well in Contaminant Area
5, LM 37, and two deeper wells 400 feet downgradient of LM 37, LM 86 and LM
90. Well LM 37 has shown TCE only, declining from 28 ug/l in 1986 to 12 ug/l
in 1988. The two deeper wells both showed neither TCE nor PCE above detection
limits. Two soil gas samples taken approximately 250 feet east of Well LM 37
showed PCE at 2 ug/1 . The one soil boring nearby showed neither TCE nor PCE
above detection limits, and the airphotos (Appendix D) showed no drum storage
in the area. The most likely source of the solvents found is one or more
undocumented spills arising from the use of solvents on the Depot.
4-192
