903806-SS4 CON-49
4.3.6.6 Contaminant Area 6. There are two wells in Contaminant Area 6, LM
35 and LM 36, and one shallow well approximately 200 feet downgradient, LM
82. The shallower well in the Contaminant Area, LM 35, has consistently
shown 5 to 8 ug/l TCE only from 1986 to 1988. The deeper well , LM 36, has
shown neither TCE nor PCE above detection limits. The downgradient well ,
LM 82, showed TCE at 0.6 ug/l and PCE at 1.4 ug/l when installed and
sampled in 1989. The soil gas samples in the area all showed total
halocarbons below 1 ug/l , and the two soil borings both showed neither TCE
nor PCE above detection limits. The airphotos (Figure 3.1-1) show drums
stored in an area generally upgradient from Contaminant Area 6; leakage and
spillage from these drums are the probable sources of the solvents found.
4.4 SURFACE WATER AND SEDIMENT
4.4.1 The elements of the surface water systems on the Depot described in
Section 2.2 were addressed in Section 4.1, Investigation of Potential
Contaminant Sources. It appears that surface water and sediment quality
are not impacted by the solvent contaminants found on the site.
4.5 AIR
4.5.1 As summarized in the Jefferson Report (1982) , the Depot was visited
by Mr. Robert Goldberg, Department of the Army, Civilian, Air Pollution
Engineering Division, USAEHA, on August 25 through September 1, 1977. The
purpose of the visit was to identify existing air pollution sources and
data and to recommend survey/study support required to generate data which
were necessary for the preparation of an environmental impact assessment.
The locations and operating procedures for the various air pollution
sources at the Depot as identified in that study are listed below:
(a) Paint Spray Booth in Warehouse 10. A conveyor line passes through
this spray booth and the doors for the line were left open, although the
line was not in operation. This reduced the indraft collection capa-
bility. The filters on the booth are adequate for collected overspray.
4-193
