Kettleman
Lodi, CA
San Joaquin County Public Health Services, Environmental Health Division has reviewed a letter response
dated August 9, 1991,prepared by Aegis Environmental. The letter refers to allowable limits in soil for TPH
as gasoline and BTEX based on Table 2-1 (Leaching Potential Analysis for Gasoline and Diesel) in the LUFT
Manual. This table was designed for use with soil sample results from soil samples taken from an
underground tank excavation not soil sample results taken from soil borings. When table 2-1 or table 2-3
(Environmental Fate Worksheet) are used the depth to groundwater is determined by seasonal high ground
water. Seasonal high ground water as determined by San Joaquin County Flood Control Maps in Spring
1986 for this site is 45 feet. Average annual precipitation in San Joaquin County is 14 inches and there is
a City of Lodi well near this site. All these factors are to be accounted for when completing Table 2-1.
When Shell removes the existing underground storage tanks at this site soil samples will be taken from
beneath the tanks and soil samples should be taken from the new tank excavation as stated in the Aegis
"Pre-Tank Replacement Site Assessment Results Report"dated October 16, 1989. The results from these soil
samples may be evaluated using the Leaching Potential Analysis Table 2-1.
Should Shell not install a monitoring well southeast of the existing and proposed tank excavations they must
continue quarterly monitoring until further site information can be evaluated.
Please be advised that ARCO'S monitoring well#12,placed in the sidewalk west of Shell, evidenced benzene
(6.9 parts per billion) and TPH-gasoline (90 parts per billion) in the water sample taken July 1991. In
addition ARCO has installed an extraction well but it is not in use.
If you have any questions contact Margaret Lagorio, Senior REHS, of my staff at (209) 468-3449.
Jogi Khanna, .D.;HS,
.P.H.
Health O
v v
tie A.
