Kurt Miller
Shell Oil Company
Post Office Box 5823
Concord, California 94524
Subject: San Joaquin County Public Health Services June 3, 1991, Letter
Shell Service Station (WIC #204-4416-0202)/Tokay Shell
420 West Kettleman Lane, Lodi, California
Dear Mr. Miller:
In response to San Joaquin County Public Health Services/Environmental Health
Division's (SJCPHS/EHD) letter dated June 3, 1991, Aegis Environmental, Inc. (Aegis),
offers the following response. Please refer to the Attachment 1 for the letter:
• The SJCPHS/EHD has requested that a groundwater monitoring well be
installed in the southeast direction of the existing underground storage
tanks (UST) and the proposed UST location (refer to figure attached) based
on results reported in Aegis' "Pre-Tank Replacement Site Assessment
Results Report" (October 16, 1989). The soil samples collected in the
borings adjacent to the existing UST reported one sample with trace
concentrations of toluene and xylenes at 0.012 and 0.003 parts-per-
million (ppm), respectively; all other samples were below detection limit
(BDL). One soil sample in the proposed tank location (B-8/2) reported
1,060 ppm of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) as gasoline, 1.810 ppm
of benzene, 6.0 ppm of toluene, 57.0 ppm of xylenes and BDL for
ethylbenzene at 10 feet below ground surface. The groundwater samples
for the three on site wells have reported BDL since installation in
October 1990. Groundwater has been reported consistently at
approximately 60 feet below ground surface. Based on the Table 2-1
"Leaching Potential Analysis for Gasoline and Diesel using Total Petroleum
Hydrocarbons and Benzene, Toluene, Xylene and Ethylbenzene" in the
"Leaking Underground Fuel Tank Field Manual: Guidelines for Site
Assessment, Cleanup, and Underground Storage Tank Closure"
(October 1989) our maximum allowable limits in soil for TPH as gasoline are
89-013J.LTR -1-
GEOLOGISTS • ENGINEERS - GROUND WATER SCIENTISTS
