AUG 19 1993
525 West Third Street
Hanford, California 93230 ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH
Subject: Work Plan for Hydrogeologic Investigation
PERMIT/SERVICES
Beacon Station No. 513
41 West Kettleman Lane
Lodi, California
Delta Project No. 40-93-942
Dear Mr. Earnest:
Delta Environmental Consultants, Inc., (Delta), has been authorized by Ultramar Inc. (Ultramar), to
conduct a hydrogeologic investigation at Beacon Station No. 513, located at 41 West Kettleman Lane,
Lodi, San Joaquin County, California (Figure 1). Delta proposes to drill six soil borings and
complete three of the borings as ground water monitoring wells. The purpose of this investigation
is to assess the extent of petroleum hydrocarbons in soil and ground water at the site. This letter
describes the work to be performed.
Project Background Information
The site is operated as a Beacon gasoline service station. There are three 12,000 gallon underground
storage tanks which contain regular unleaded, plus unleaded, and premium unleaded gasoline. A soil
vapor survey conducted on June 8, 1993, by Remediation Testing Design, did not detect the presence
of petroleum hydrocarbons in shallow soil at the site. Results of this investigation were presented
in a report dated July 1, 1993.
Scope of Work
The proposed work includes advancing three 8-inch diameter angled soil borings to approximately
50 feet below grade, and three 10-inch diameter vertical soil borings to approximately 65 feet below
grade or,10 feet below the water table. The angled soil borings will be drilled at approximately
30 degrees off vertical in order to collect soil samples from beneath the tanks and pump islands. The
deeper borings will be completed as ground water monitoring wells, which will be used to evaluate
the extent of petroleum hydrocarbons in ground water and to determine the direction of ground water
flow. Based on an anticipated direction of ground water flow toward the southwest, monitoring well
MW-1 will be an up-gradient well, monitoring well MW-2 will be located down-gradient of the
underground storage tanks, and monitoring well MW-3 will be located down-gradient of the pump
islands. The proposed soil boring and monitoring well locations are illustrated in Figure 2. The
methods to be used to drill and sample the soil borings are described in Enclosure A.
Delta Delivers Solutions
