1- Mr Chuck Carmel
` March 23, 1994
Page 3
The SVETS consists of eight soil vapor extraction wells (VE-1, VE-2, VE-3, VE-4, VE-5,
VE-6, VE-7 and VE-8) and a soil vapor treatment system The soil vapor treatment system
is composed of a vacuum compressor pump followed by a King-Buck-Hasstech catalytic
oxidizer that has a design treatment flow rate of 100 cubic feet per minute (ctm) of soil
vapor The system is operated under Permit to Operate No N-1081-1-0 issued by San
Joaquin Valley Unified Air Pollution Control Distract
Operating Conditions This Quarter. Due to nondetectable concentrations in all
monitoring wells, the groundwater extraction and treatment system did not operate during
the third quarter of 1993
The SVETS operated nearly continuously at 75 to 90 cfm during this quarter Vapors were
extracted from wells VE-3, VE-4, VE-6, VE-7 and VE-8
Results and Discussion The current, historical, and total concentrations of BTEX and
TPH in the extracted soil vapor are shown in Table 4 Table 5 summarizes the status of
the vapor extraction wells and analytical results from the individual wells No vapor
samples were collected from the individual wells during the fourth quarter of 1993 The
soil vapor laboratory reports and chain-ot-custody documentation are included in Exhibit B
• Influent concentrations appear to be steadily declining, indicating that the hydrocarbons are
being successfully remediated
The SVETS will continue to be operated in a manner designed to remediate soil and soil
vapors effectively and quickly by
• Concentrating extraction from areas with highest concentrations in vapor, as
monitored by field instruments and periodic laboratory analyses of air samples
• Maximizing influent concentration to the catalytic oxidizer Influent air samples
are collected monthly and used to evaluate this criteria
• Soil bonnos will be drilled and soil samples will be collected to determine areas
where hydrocarbons are present in the soil A work plan describing the details
of this drilling and sampling is in preparation and will be submitted to the
County by March 23, 1994 The data will be used to evaluate it additional vapor
extraction wells are needed
Recommendations
Based on the operation of the SVETS during the fourth quarter of 1993, the SVETS will
continue to operate However, Brown and Caldwell proposes that due to the decline in soil
. vapor influent concentrations to the catalytic, oxidizer and the lack of groundwater
Use or disclosure of data contained on du,% sheet is vibjecr to the revrictton apecifted at the beginning of thin
document 7-184\RLP0R1 S\NOV9IQTR RVT
r
