k%J KLEINFELDER
Soil samples will be collected by advancing the boring to a point
immediately above the sampling depth and then driving a Modified
California Sampler lined with three brass tubes into the undisturbed
soil. The sampler will be removed from the bottom of the boring and the
bottom leading tube sealed with aluminum foil and tight-fitting plastic
caps. The sealed tube will be labeled and immediately stored in a cooler
at 40C. At the end of drilling operations, select soil samples will be
maintained under chain-of-custody procedures. The soil samples will be
retained by Kleinfelder for 60 days in refrigerated storage for future
reference or analysis.
3.1.2 Qualitative Field Screening
A Photovac TIP, using a photoionization detector (PID) sensitive to
aromatic and other gasoline related compounds, will be used to screen each
soil sample collected from the soil borings. Calibration will be
performed prior to use in the field using a 100 ppm isobutylene
calibration gas. The field screening of the soil samples with the PID is
intended to provide a qualitative indication of the presence of petroleum
hydrocarbons. Selection of soil samples which may be submitted for
chemical analysis will be based on the PID results. The screening
procedure will consist of scraping the top soil layer in the middle tube
to expose fresh soil and scanning the vapors emitted from the soil. The
vapor reading will be noted and evaluated at the completion of the field
work portion of the investigation to select samples for chemical analyses.
For the protection of the field crew, the PID will also be used to measure
the total volatile concentrations in the breathing zone prior to and
during the drilling of the soil borings. Total ionizable hydrocarbon
readings in excess of 5 ppm above background in the breathing zone will
necessitate respiratory protection measures. This requirement will be
outlined in a field safety plan for this project.
45-88-01 7
