2.2 Physical Hazards
The principal physical hazards at the site include:
• Temperature stress;
• Sun exposure;
• Severe weather;
• Equipment;
• Noise;
• Slip,trip and fall;
• Excavations and trenches and
• Train traffic.
2.2.1 Temperature Stress
Autumn in Stockton is expected to be cool, with a mean maximum temperature of 64°F and a
mean minimum temperature of 42.3°F in November (Western Regional Climate Center,
Stockton WSO).
As with excessive heat, cold conditions may also present a health risk to employees during field
activities. Two factors influence the risk potential for cold stress: temperature and wind velocity.
Bare flesh and areas of the body which have high surface area to volume ratios such as fingers,toes,
and ears are most susceptible to wind chill or extremely low ambient temperatures. Procedures that
shall be implemented to prevent or reduce the risk of cold stress include:
• Training to familiarize individuals with cold stress syndrome;
• Implementation of work/rest cycles, as appropriate, to reduce the duration of
exposure to the cold and allow employees to warm up;
Rough&Ready Island 4 Tetra Tech,Inc.
Revised Draft HSP November 18, 1998
