2.0 HAZARD RISK ANALYSIS
The field activities during the project may present a variety of chemical and physical hazards.
Actual personal exposures to these hazards are dependent upon the specific work task, weather
conditions, level of protection utilized, and personnel work habits. Control of these hazards will
be accomplished through site reconnaissance and hazard identification, training of site personnel,
personal protection equipment, and supervision of site activities.
2.1 Chemical Hazards
Personnel involved in field activities may be exposed to petroleum hydrocarbon impacted soil
from a hydraulic oil leak. If additional hazards are later identified on the site, the additional
health hazard summary information shall be included with this plan as an addendum.
Petroleum hydrocarbons have been detected at the site in the diesel and hydraulic oil range (C12
to C32). This class of compounds causes irritation of the upper respiratory tract and can cause
nervous system effects ranging from dizziness and headache to coma and respiratory arrest if
inhaled in large quantities. Ingestion causes throat, lung, and stomach irritation. Skin exposure
causes a burning sensation.
Compound PEL STEL
Total petroleum hydrocarbon none none
Respirable Dust 5 mg/m3 none
PEL=permissible exposure limit
STEL=short-term exposure limit
Rough&Ready Island 3 Tetra Tech,Inc.
Revised Draft HSP November 18, 1998
